If Peter Tosh had written the whole song as some claim, he would have sung all the verses. Let's be serious, the literary style of the first two stanzas is pure Marley: short verses, composed of simple, raw and direct words. I may be an idiot, but the person who wrote "preacherman, don't tell me heaven is under the earth. I know you don't know what life is really worth" in 1973 and "I feel like bombing a church now that you know that the preacher is lying" (Talkin' Blues) in 1974 can only be the same person. The logical sequence is there, obvious and undeniable.

I first heard this version (the original version) in the late summer of 1972 just after I turned 9 years old. I was familiar with Mountain’s version both off Climbing & one of the Woodstock albums. I was really getting into Cream at the time and my cousin (who was 13 years old) knew the song was written by Jack Bruce (& Peter Brown) so she played me his original version off of Songs For a Tailor. It was a bizarre moment because I started crying because it was just so dramatic & emotional. As I said I knew of the Mountain versions but neither affected me like that. It was just a cool tune by a band with a great guitarist (to my young ears). But Jack Bruce’s version just hit me. I didnt understand what exactly the lyrics were about (those that I understood)… But it was the combination of his voice, the dramatic music and the lyrics which hit me. Now we move forward to today (August 9th, 2024) and I’m 61 years old. It still makes me cry. Back in the late 70s & 80s when I was in my late teens and twenties I was in a variety f bands… and this was a song I always wanted to cover (or at least do during sound check) because of the way it hit me. Jack Bruce was always the best part of Cream. He was the engine that made that group roar. His songwriting ability and partnership with Peter Brown was golden. RIP Jack ❤
